Karnataka: Health Minister's Action After Pregnant Woman's Death, Three Nurses Including Accused Doctor Suspended

Karnataka: State Health Minister K Sudhakar has taken strict action in the death of a pregnant woman in Tumakuru, Karnataka. The Health Minister has suspended three nurses of the maternity ward, including the accused doctor, with immediate effect. Along with this, a committee has been formed to investigate the whole matter. The three-member committee will submit its report within three weeks. After which further action will be taken.

Suspended employees can be sacked: Health Minister K Sudhakar said that the whole matter is being investigated by a three-member committee headed by the Commissioner of Health Department. If the doctor and the three nurses are found guilty in this investigation, then their suspension will turn into dismissal. The minister said that if found guilty, legal action will also be taken against the accused.

Health Minister expressed grief: Health Minister K Sudhakar said about the incident that he is deeply saddened by the unfortunate death of a pregnant woman and two newborn babies in Tumakuru. He said that after taking stock of this shocking incident by visiting the hospital last night, orders have been given for investigation and strict action in the matter. He said that prima facie, negligence of three nurses in-charge of the maternity ward and one on-duty doctor was found. His immediate suspension has been ordered with further investigation, he said.

Refusal to admit the woman: The accused doctor and three nurses at Tumakuru hospital allegedly refused to admit a woman named Kasturi. was refused. The victim woman was pregnant with twins. The on-duty doctors and nurses did not admit the woman because she did not have an Aadhar card or Tai (maternity) card. She was suggested to visit Victoria Hospital in Bangalore.

Death of a woman with two newborns: The victim woman used to earn her living by working as a laborer. She was unable to go to Bangalore by ambulance. Because of this, she returned to her home last Wednesday. The next day on Thursday, she started labor pains and after giving birth to a child, she died of excessive bleeding. She could not give birth to another child. After the death of the woman, the newborn also died.
