'Terrorism Is The Biggest Threat To Humanity, India Is Committed To Stop,' Said External Affairs Minister At UNSC Meeting

UNSC Meeting In Delhi: Addressing the UNSC Special Meeting of the Anti-Terrorism Committee in the national capital, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said, “Terrorism remains the greatest threat to humanity. Over the past two decades, the United Nations Security Council has developed a significant architecture primarily around counter-terrorism. The regime is committed to countering this threat.” At the same time he said that it has been very effective in putting countries on notice that had turned terrorism into a state funded enterprise.”

‘The threat of terrorism is increasing in Asia and Africa’

The ongoing meeting in Delhi is being chaired by the Anti-Terrorism Committee (CTC) of India. Jaishankar told the CTC members that their presence in Delhi at the special meeting reflects the importance that a wide range of UNSC member states and stakeholders place on this important and emerging aspect of terrorism.

‘Terrorism one of the top priorities’

He said, “The Council is holding this special meeting of its counter-terrorism meetings in India, it is also a product of the fact that terrorism became one of the top priorities during our current tenure in the Security Council. Is.” Highlighting the flip sides of emerging technologies, Jaishankar said that technologies such as virtual private networks, encrypted messaging services and blockchain also pose new challenges for governments and regulatory bodies.

‘Internet and social media support for conspiracy’

The External Affairs Minister said that internet and social media platforms have become powerful tools in the toolkit of terrorist groups to spread propaganda, bigotry and conspiracy theories aimed at creating instability in the society. In conclusion, Jaishankar announced that India will contribute half a million to the United Nations Trust Fund for Counter Terrorism this year to augment UNOCT’s efforts in providing capacity-building assistance to member countries in preventing and combating the menace of terrorism.
